Highlights

A new museum presents the history of the Sicilian sulphur mines

Sulphur mining activity has marked the last two centuries of Sicilian history. In the period of highest production, between the end of the 1800’s and the beginning of the 1900’s, the sector included 40,000 workers and contributed 90% of the world’s production. This period was followed by a crisis that completely halted activity. The Superintendent of Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Caltanissetta has worked for years toward the goal of preserving and improving the historic cultural heritage tied to this type of work. The new Sulphur Museum is located near the di Trabia Tallarita mine, between Sommatino and Riesi, in the province of Caltanissetta. This important example of industrial archaeology, located in the building of the former Palladio electric power plant, is a project of the Superintendence of Caltanissetta, directed by Rosalba Panvini. The museum is a project valued at over five and a half million euro which opened after six years of work. It occupies an area of six thousand square meters.
