In China, following in the footprints of Matteo Ricci

In commemoration of the four-hundred anniversary of the Jesuit's death, the Region of Le Marche announces the organisation of a travelling exhibit entitled “Matteo Ricci. Encountering the Ming Civilisation in China” , curated by Filippo Mignini, director of the Matteo Ricci Institute for Eastern Relations. The exhibit will appear in three locations: Beijing (February 6th – March 20th), Shanghai (April 2nd – May 23rd), Nanking (June 4th – July 25th). Li Madou is the name given to Matteo Ricci (Macerata, 1552 ‐ Beijing, 1610) in China, were he was buried: the Jesuit earned the trust of a population diffident towards the foreign “devil”, to the point of being the only Westerner next to Marco Polo present in the great monument of Beijing to the Chinese heroes of the second millennium. For his profound respect for other culture, and for his natural diplomacy, for his incredible ability of the art of its memory and for his wise use of dialogue, he was able to earn the title of Xitai, “the master of the Far East”, playing a crucial role in the relationship between Italy and the Middle Kingdom.
