Chapter
Dominican Salento, the “polycentric city” of convents
Copertino
Copertino, Convent of Santa Maria dell’Idria
The Convent of Santa Maria dell'Idria of Copertino was founded in the 16th century, between 1569 and 1571. The structure, established by Monseigneur Ambrogio
Salvo, Bishop of Nardò, contains altars made from Leccese stone and the painting of Madonna del Rosario by Gian Domenico Catalano. It was rebuilt in 1665 (after having collapsed in 1657) by the University of
Copertino. Suppressed in 1809, and in part designated for commercial use, it was restored in 1954 with the modification of the façade and the elimination of the
main altar and choir loft.
