Dominican Salento, the “polycentric city” of convents
Cavallino
Cavallino, Church and Convent of Saints Dominic and Niccolò
The Church and convent of Saints Dominic and Niccolò date back to the 17th century. The foundation, on the part of Beatrice Acquaviva in Castromediano, Lady of Cavallino,
happened between 1626 and 1635. Tithe-collection operations were carried out on
grains, olives, grapes, legumes, and figs. In one annexed structure, the friars handled
assistance to the poor, including a clinic and a pharmacy. Abolished and repossessed in 1809, it then became
the municipal headquarters and afterwards a textile workshop and tobacco factory. It has been the Municipality's property since
1894.
