MArRC - Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Reggio di Calabria

Type:

Luoghi della cultura; Ente/Istituzione

Category:

Archaeology museums

The National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria is one of the rare examples of buildings designed and built to house museum collections.

The Museum has been the subject of a significant restoration project.

The new structure offers the public a modern Museum, designed according to international quality standards, both in terms of set-ups and multimedia, interactivity and exhibition areas.

The MArRC is one of the most representative archaeological museums of the Magna Graecia. Known worldwide for the permanent exhibition of the famous Bronzes of Riace, masterpieces of bronze statuary from the 5th century BC, it also houses a rich collection of finds from all over Calabria, from Prehistory to the late Roman Age.

The new museum itinerary starts from the top, where is a section that is dedicated to Prehistory, and extends to the ground floor through the exhibition of the great templar architecture of the territories of Locri, Kaulonia and Punta Alice, guaranteeing a spatial and logical continuity with the exhibition of materials, each one provided with explanatory texts and dedicated supports, aims to "tell" the history of Calabria to the visitor.

In the basement the allocation of the exhibition halls is supplemented by three spaces intended for temporary exhibitions.

Palazzo Piacentini overlooks Piazza De Nava, in the historic center of the city.

The area is very well served from a transport point of view, adjacent to the Reggio-Lido railway station and thanks to its excellent position it is easily reachable both by public and private means of transport, and for those who move inside of the city center (there are numerous parking lots) and for those arriving from the outside (the connection to the A3 motorway is not far away).

RECOMMENDATIONS
Access to the Bronze Room is allowed for groups of up to 20 visitors at a time and is subject to time restrictions according to the following program:

stop about 10 minutes in the pre-filter room, where a video on the Riace Bronzes entertains the public;

stop about 3' in the Filter Room;

visit to the Bronzes maximum 20'.
