The Pala d'Oro, or gold altarpiece, in St. Mark's Basilica, in Venice. In the upper part, the archangel Michael surrounded by medals with saints and stories from the life of Christ; in the lower part, the blessing Redeemer, evangelists and angels. The three enamels below the central panel depict the Virgin, the emperor John II Comnenus, and the empress Irene. Evangelical scenes and stories from the life of St. Mark are on the band surrounding the polyptych.
